I draw for a living, mostly book covers and editorial work for magazines, and I teach on the side because I like it more than I expected. I studied illustration at Parsons and moved back to Short Hills after a few years of tiny apartments in Brooklyn.
My lessons are about seeing, not talent. We start with a mug, a pair of glasses, a set of keys, whatever is nearby, and I show you how to break it into simple shapes. From there we add line weight and a little shading with ink. I bring good pens and a sketchbook for each student, plus a slanted drawing board that makes it much easier on the wrists and neck. Some students like to work from old family photos later on, and those sessions tend to be my favorite.
On weekends I sit on a bench at Taylor Park and sketch whoever walks by. Nobody has caught me yet.
Minute 0 to 5
We pick three or four simple objects from around the house and set them on the table.
Minute 5 to 15
Warm-up drawing: lines, circles and loose shapes to get comfortable with the pen.
Minute 15 to 45
We draw one object together step by step, breaking it into shapes and then adding detail.
Minute 45 to 55
A short lesson on shading with ink, using hatching on the drawing you just made.
Minute 55 to 60
I leave you with the sketchbook and a small assignment for the week.
