Home Happenings

Why it matters

Keep doing what you love.

At any age, in any situation. That's the whole idea behind Home Happenings: bring the lesson, the game or the garden to the house, so the good parts of life keep happening.

A week needs something in it

Ask anyone who has retired, or watched a parent retire, and you'll hear a version of the same thing. The days got longer and quieter. The calendar that used to be full of work, kids and errands thinned out, and nothing quite replaced it.

It's rarely a crisis. It's just that Tuesday starts to look like Wednesday. A standing piano lesson, a weekly game of chess or a Thursday in the garden gives the week a shape again. There's something to get ready for, something to talk about at dinner, and someone coming who expects you to be there.

Learning doesn't have an age limit

Plenty of people pick up an instrument, a paintbrush or a new recipe at 75 and get genuinely good at it. Progress might be slower than it was at 20, but it's real, and you can hear it and see it from one week to the next.

Learning something new is also just fun. It's the small thrill of getting through the first verse with both hands, or finally beating your teacher at canasta. That feeling doesn't expire.

Keep doing what you love

For a lot of people it isn't about something new at all. It's about the thing they always loved and quietly stopped doing. The bridge group broke up. Driving to the studio got harder. The knees don't like kneeling in the garden the way they used to.

None of that means the love of it went away. Usually it just needs a few adjustments: a raised bed instead of the ground, a chair yoga routine instead of a class across town, a fourth player who comes to you. Our pros are good at those adjustments.

Why at home makes the difference

Getting somewhere is often the hardest part. Parking, stairs, bad weather, a long drive, a busy room full of strangers. Any one of those can turn "I'd love to" into "maybe next month."

When the lesson comes to the house, all of that disappears. Your own kitchen, your own piano, your own garden, your own pace. It's easier to start, and much easier to keep going week after week, which is where the good stuff happens.

It helps the whole family too

If you're an adult child, especially one who lives far away, it's hard to know how a parent's week is really going. A pro who comes every Tuesday, and a short note after each visit, tells you a lot. And it gives you something good to ask about on the phone besides doctor's appointments.

It also takes a little weight off. You aren't the only one bringing something fun into Mom or Dad's life. Someone they like, who's good at what they do, is showing up for them every week.
