About me

I taught physical education and coached wrestling at a high school in Union County for thirty years. I liked the kids, but what I really liked was helping the ones who thought they were not athletic find out they were. Older adults remind me of those kids more than you would think. Most just need someone to show them where to start.

My sessions are practical. We work on getting up from a low couch, climbing stairs with confidence, and walking a little farther each week. When the weather is nice we take part of the lesson outside for a walk around the block, and I coach your posture and stride as we go. I am not a drill sergeant. I am the coach who talks about the Yankees between sets.

I live in Millburn with my wife, Ellen, and we have two grown daughters. Most mornings I walk the Lenape Trail in South Mountain Reservation, and at 59 I still beat my old students to the top of Washington Rock.

What a first visit looks like

  1. 1

    Minute 0 to 10

We talk about your daily routine, your stairs, your favorite chair, and what you would like to do more of.

  2. 2

    Minute 10 to 20

A quick look at how you stand, walk and climb a step, so I know where to start.

  3. 3

    Minute 20 to 50

Strength work for legs and core using a chair and a band, with lots of rest between sets.

  4. 4

    Minute 50 to 65

A short walk inside or around the block, then I write out your three exercises for the week.
