About me

I taught art at a middle school in West Orange for twenty six years, and when I retired I found I missed the moment a student realizes they actually made something good. So I started teaching again, this time at dining tables instead of classrooms.

My lessons are built around small, finished projects. Greeting cards, bookmarks, a page of painted flowers. I trace light pencil guides for anyone who wants them, and we use paper sized so you never feel lost on a big white sheet. Students in their eighties often tell me they have not held a brush since grade school. By the second visit they are asking for more paper.

I grew up in Fort Lee and moved to West Orange when my kids were small. I volunteer at the Turtle Back Zoo craft table in summer, and I keep a sketchbook of the zoo's flamingos that is now on its third volume. My husband thinks I should paint something besides flamingos. I disagree.

What a first visit looks like

  1. 1

    Minute 0 to 10

Look through sample cards and choose a simple flower or leaf to paint.

  2. 2

    Minute 10 to 25

Practice three brushstrokes on scrap paper until they feel natural.

  3. 3

    Minute 25 to 55

Paint your first greeting card, start to finish, with my help as needed.

  4. 4

    Minute 55 to 65

Add your message, tidy the edges, and pick next week's project.
