Before I was a trainer, I taught tap and jazz dance in Livingston for close to fifteen years. When my own mother started getting nervous on stairs, I realized how much of what I taught kids, weight shifts, footwork, knowing where your body is, mattered even more for her. I got certified in 2010 and have worked with older adults ever since.
My sessions feel a little like a dance class without the pressure. I bring a speaker and we warm up to whatever music you like, then work through standing balance with a chair close by, a few strength moves, and some walking drills across your living room. I keep notes on every visit so we can see progress, like how long you can stand on one foot or how many times you can rise from a chair.
I live near Riker Hill with my husband and a very spoiled cat. On Sunday mornings we walk the paths at South Mountain Reservation, and I still cannot resist tapping a little on the bridge.
Minute 0 to 10
We talk about how you move during the day and anything that makes you feel unsteady or slow.
Minute 10 to 20
A music warm-up: marching in place, arm circles and ankle rolls, seated or standing.
Minute 20 to 50
Balance and strength work with a chair close by: heel raises, side steps, and sit-to-stands.
Minute 50 to 65
Walking drills across the room, then I write down three moves to practice before our next visit.
