About me

For twenty years I designed packaging and print ads at an agency in Parsippany. When the agency closed in 2019, I went back to the thing I loved before any of that, which was painting outside with a cheap travel set. These days I teach watercolor at kitchen tables all over Maplewood and the Oranges.

My lessons start small on purpose. We paint one pear, one tulip, one stretch of sky over Memorial Park. I show you how to let the water do the work instead of fighting it, and I keep a stack of practice postcards so nobody feels pressure to make a masterpiece. Larger brush handles and a tilted board help a lot if your hands get stiff.

I also do therapy dog visits with Biscuit, a nine year old golden who is calmer than I am. If you would like, he can come along and lie under the table while we paint. Most people end up sketching him at least once.

What a first visit looks like

  1. 1

    Minute 0 to 10

We look at a few of my sample postcards and you pick a subject you would like to try, like a pear or a simple sky.

  2. 2

    Minute 10 to 25

I show you three basic washes: flat, graded and wet into wet, and you try each on a scrap sheet.

  3. 3

    Minute 25 to 45

We paint your first small piece together, step by step, while I point out where to let the color spread.

  4. 4

    Minute 45 to 55

Biscuit gets a few minutes of petting time if he came along, then we look over what you made.

  5. 5

    Minute 55 to 60

I leave you two practice postcards and a short list of what to try before next time.
