My grandmother taught me gin rummy at her kitchen table in Union when I was seven, and she never once let me win. I have been teaching card games ever since, first to cousins, then to residents at an independent living building in Livingston where I ran the Thursday game hour for three years.
I keep things simple. One game per visit, rules written in large print on a single sheet, and we play open hands for the first round so you can see what I am thinking. Cribbage takes a little longer to click, so I bring my own board with oversized pegs. I also teach light strength workouts, and some families book a split visit, twenty minutes of chair exercises and then cards.
During the week I work as a personal trainer in Millburn. On weekends you will find me at the Maplewood farmers market buying far too many peaches.
Minute 0 to 5
We talk about which games you already know, if any, and pick one to start with.
Minute 5 to 15
I walk through the rules using my large print sheet and a few sample hands laid face up.
Minute 15 to 45
We play two or three open hands together, talking through each choice before you make it.
Minute 45 to 55
Then a real game, cards hidden, while I stay nearby to answer questions as they come up.
Minute 55 to 60
I leave the rule sheet with you and we pick the next game to learn.
