For about twenty years I ran the help desk at an insurance office in Parsippany, which mostly meant explaining the same thing three different ways until it clicked. When the office went remote I decided I liked the explaining part best, so now I teach phones, tablets and laptops in people's homes around Bloomfield, Glen Ridge and Montclair.
My rule is that your hands stay on the device, not mine. I sit beside you, we do the task once together, then you do it on your own while I watch. Before I leave I write the steps on an index card in big print, in your words. Common first lessons are FaceTime with the grandkids, finding photos, sorting out email, and spotting a scam text before you tap it.
I live a few blocks from Brookdale Park and walk my beagle there most mornings. If you see a tall guy talking to a dog about software updates, that is probably me.
