I play piano for a church choir in Glen Ridge and teach out of my home studio, and for the past five years a big part of my week has been lessons for adults sixty and up. I studied music at Rutgers, but most of what I know about teaching I learned from my grandmother, who learned to read music at seventy.
We start with songs you already know by heart, because your ear is doing half the work for you. A hymn, a Motown tune, a song from your wedding. I teach a few simple chords first, then the melody, so you are making real music in the first lesson. If reading notes feels like too much, we skip it and play by ear. Plenty of great musicians never read a note.
I live in Glen Ridge with my husband and our toddler, who has opinions about every song I play. If you go to the summer concerts at Brookdale Park, you may have heard me there too.
