I spent eleven years running the greenhouse at a garden center off Route 10 before I started teaching on my own. Most of my week now is spent in backyards around Roseland and Livingston, showing people how to grow food and flowers in whatever space they have, even if that is three pots by the back door.
With older students I keep the work at waist height whenever I can. Raised beds, deep containers on a table, a stool to sit on while we prune. We talk through why a plant is doing what it is doing, so you can make the next call yourself after I leave. I also teach simple strength routines, and I fold a few of those moves in when a student wants to keep bending and lifting comfortably in the garden.
I grew up helping my grandmother with her chili plants in a tiny yard in Edison. These days you can find me at the Montclair farmers market on Saturdays, usually asking the growers too many questions about their peppers.

Write a one page plan for the next two weeks and leave it on your fridge.
