For thirty-one years I taught physical education at a middle school in Maplewood. I coached track in the spring and ran the after-school walking club for teachers, which is how I first noticed that the adults needed the practice more than the kids did.
When I retired I earned my senior fitness certification and started working with older neighbors. My sessions are simple and steady. We work on balance at the kitchen counter, practice turning and stepping the way you would on a busy sidewalk, and use light dumbbells for the arms. I count out loud, I keep it light, and I tell a lot of bad jokes about the Mets.
My wife and I have lived in South Orange since 1991. On Saturdays you can find me walking the Rahway River trail or buying too many peaches at the Maplewood farmers market. If your mother wants to feel steadier walking to church or around the block, that is exactly the kind of goal I like.
Minute 0 to 10
Chat about where you walk each week and any spots that feel shaky, like curbs or the step into the tub.
Minute 10 to 25
Balance checks at the counter: standing on one foot, a heel-to-toe line, and turning in place.
Minute 25 to 45
Strength circuit with light dumbbells and a chair: arm curls, marches, side steps and sit-to-stands.
Minute 45 to 60
Practice a short walk together, then leave a one-page plan with three daily moves.
