About me

I taught art at a middle school in Union for eight years before going part time to have my daughter. Teaching adults was a surprise. They ask better questions than twelve year olds and they actually clean their brushes.

Acrylic is my main medium because it dries fast and forgives a lot. We usually start with a still life or a simple landscape, and I bring a tabletop easel and a palette with the colors already mixed so you can focus on painting. When hands are less steady, collage works beautifully. We tear old magazines, maps and seed packets and build pictures from them. Several students have made collages from family letters and ticket stubs, and those turn out to be the pieces people frame.

I grew up in Millburn and still love seeing a show at the Paper Mill Playhouse. I always end up sketching the set design in the program during intermission.

What a first visit looks like

  1. 1

    Minute 0 to 10

We look through a few sample paintings and collages and you choose which to try first.

  2. 2

    Minute 10 to 20

I set up the easel and palette and show you how to load a brush and blend two colors.

  3. 3

    Minute 20 to 50

We paint or build your first small piece together, working in layers from background forward.

  4. 4

    Minute 50 to 60

We clean up, talk about what you liked, and plan the next project.
