About me

I played guitar in wedding and party bands from 1982 until my knees told me to stop carrying amplifiers. That is a lot of Saturdays playing Moon River and Brown Eyed Girl, and I still love both. In between gigs, my wife and I ran a small Korean restaurant in Fort Lee for over twenty years, so I can also teach you a very good kimchi stew.

For music, I usually suggest the ukulele first. It is light, the strings are soft on the fingertips, and you can play a real song with three chords in the first lesson. Students who want more move to guitar. I tune everything before we start and mark the frets with small stickers so your eyes do not have to work hard. On cooking days we keep it to one dish, and I bring the gochujang.

At 65 I am retired from gigs but not from playing. I sit in at an open mic in West Orange most months, and my grandkids request the Pokemon theme every time they visit.

What a first visit looks like

  1. 1

    Minute 0 to 10

We talk about the songs you grew up with and I let you hold both the ukulele and the guitar.

  2. 2

    Minute 10 to 25

How to hold the instrument, strum with your thumb and press down a first easy chord.

  3. 3

    Minute 25 to 55

We learn three chords and play a full song together, slowly, with me singing along if you like.

  4. 4

    Minute 55 to 65

I mark your chord chart with colors and leave a borrowed ukulele so you can practice all week.
