About me

I finished culinary school three years ago and have been working early mornings at a bakery in Summit ever since. The 5 a.m. shifts end by early afternoon, which leaves time for teaching, and I like that even more than the baking.

When I teach, we bake one thing from start to finish. Banana bread, oatmeal cookies, a galette that does not need a pie dish. I measure everything into small bowls before we start so the hard part is already done, and I always pick recipes that are hard to ruin. If your mixer is old or heavy, we mix by hand. Most of my students end up wanting to recreate something their own mother made, so I will gladly work from a handwritten recipe card if you have one.

My own grandmother made flan every Sunday in Newark, and I still have not gotten hers quite right. I keep trying.

What a first visit looks like

  1. 1

    Minute 0 to 5

We read through the recipe together and talk about any family recipes you would like to try later.

  2. 2

    Minute 5 to 20

I measure ingredients into small bowls and show you how to cream butter and sugar by hand.

  3. 3

    Minute 20 to 40

We mix the batter or dough, shape it, and get it into the oven together.

  4. 4

    Minute 40 to 55

While it bakes we clean up and I show you one easy topping or glaze to finish it.

  5. 5

    Minute 55 to 60

We taste the result and I leave you a printed copy of the recipe.
