I was a CPA for thirty years, and I like to say bridge is the only place where counting things is still fun. I learned the game from my father at our kitchen table in Fort Lee and have been playing at clubs around North Jersey ever since. In 2016 I became an accredited teacher with the American Contract Bridge League.
Most people who call me either played in college and forgot, or always wanted to learn but felt the bidding was too much. I teach with cards face up and a simple written system that fits on one page. We play practice hands, then real ones. I am also a certified trainer, so if someone wants to stay limber, we do a few minutes of seated stretching and grip work between rubbers. Nobody wants stiff hands at the card table.
I live in Livingston with my wife, who is a better declarer than I am and reminds me often. On Thursdays I play duplicate at a club in Short Hills.
Minute 0 to 10
We talk about what card games you know and whether you have ever played bridge or whist.
Minute 10 to 25
With all four hands face up, I show how tricks and trumps work and how a hand is won.
Minute 25 to 45
We bid and play practice deals using a one-page cheat sheet, talking through every decision.
Minute 45 to 55
Seated hand and shoulder stretches, then I leave the cheat sheet and two hands to try on your own.
