Verona sits in the valley between the First and Second Watchung ridges, with the Peckman River running through it and Bloomfield Avenue carrying most of the town's daily traffic past Town Hall, the middle school and the shops. It is a place where a lot of people stay for decades. Plenty of people grow up here, move away, and later find themselves managing a parent's week from a distance or from a few towns over.
Home Happenings is a new marketplace built for that situation. We match older adults living at home with vetted local professionals who come to the house to teach or lead something: a piano lesson, a watercolor afternoon, a yoga class in the living room, a plan for the backyard garden. The point is simple. Your parent gets a standing reason to look forward to Tuesday, and you get a person you can trust who shows up on time and does what they said they would.
You browse profiles of pros who have chosen to travel to Verona. Each profile has a photo, a short hello video, four quick answers about who they are and how they teach, the towns they cover, their open times, reviews and their hourly rate. When one looks right, you request a visit. Someone from the Home Happenings team calls you within one business day to confirm the details and answer questions.
If you or your parent would like to meet the pro first, there is a free 10-minute hello call before the first paid visit. Visits run 1, 1.5 or 2 hours. You can book the same pro at the same time every week, which makes it easy for a parent to plan around. Because pros pick the exact towns they serve, the person who comes to a house near Hilltop Reservation may also cover Montclair, Cedar Grove or West Orange, but they have said yes to Verona specifically.
Verona Park is the obvious heart of a lot of visits. The 54-acre Essex County park at Bloomfield and Lakeside Avenues was laid out from Olmsted Brothers plans, and its 13-acre lake was formed in 1814 when the Peckman River was dammed for a grist mill. Today it has winding paths, a 1.2-mile fitness loop, an arched footbridge, a gazebo, bocce courts and a boathouse that rents rowboats and paddle boats on weekend afternoons in season.
For a visit at the park, a pro can meet your parent there and plan around how they move, since Verona is a town of hills. A yoga instructor might lead a chair class on the open lawn on a mild morning. A personal trainer might use a park bench and the exercise stations along the fitness loop. An art teacher might set up a sketchbook by the footbridge in October when the trees around the water turn. When the weather is wrong, every one of these activities works just as well inside the house.
Families choose from Music lessons, Art lessons, Personal training, Yoga, Therapy dog visits, Gardening, Card games, Cooking lessons and Tech help. Each pro teaches one or more of these, at your parent's pace, with real instruction rather than just passing the time.
A few fit Verona especially well. Gardening makes sense in a town with a township community garden behind the middle school, where residents lease raised beds each season, and with so many older homes that have a backyard bed or a row of tomatoes by the fence. Tech help pairs nicely with the Verona Public Library on Gould Street: a pro can help your parent get comfortable with a tablet or e-reader at home, or meet there and browse the library's online catalog together. Card games travel well, from a kitchen table to a bench at Verona Park on a warm afternoon. And music lessons suit the long winters, when the lake is gray and an hour at the piano is a bright spot in the week.
Verona's other big green space sits on the Second Watchung ridge. Hilltop Reservation covers 284 acres across Verona, Cedar Grove and North Caldwell, with trails along the ridgeline and areas certified as wildlife habitat. For a parent who loves birds and trees, it can be a good source of ideas when a gardening pro is planning what goes into the backyard next spring.
On the other side of town, Kip's Castle Park straddles the Verona and Montclair line on First Mountain, with its stone mansion and an octagonal rose garden. The West Essex Trail, a path along a former railroad line, also runs through Verona. Both the castle and the rose garden make good subjects for a sketchbook, and the roses give a gardening pro something to point to when your parent asks what might grow at home.
Every Home Happenings pro completes exactly five checks before they can be booked: an online search, a real conversation with our team, a signed provider agreement, a criminal background check through a screening vendor, and a national sex offender registry check. We do not claim more than that, and we think you should know exactly what has been done.
Your parent's home address stays private and is shared with the pro only once a visit is confirmed. If something about a visit does not feel right, you call us and a person answers.
Each pro sets a single hourly rate between $60 and $120, and our team approves it. You see that rate on the profile before you book. Families pay a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee, shown right under the price, so a $80 hour comes to $84.60. You pay when you book.
Pros keep 85% of their rate, and the rest supports the vetting, insurance and the team that sets up each visit. There are no memberships or packages to buy.
Home Happenings is new, and we are building our roster of Verona pros now. Start by browsing the profiles for Verona, or tell us what your parent enjoys and when they are usually free, and we will suggest a few people who fit. A good first step is often a hello call, then one visit, then a decision about whether to make it weekly.
Fall is a good time to begin. The boathouse wraps up its season in mid-October, the gardens are being put to bed, and the indoor months are long. Having a standing visit on the calendar, with someone your parent knows by name, makes the winter feel shorter.

Yes. Each pro chooses the exact towns they travel to, and pros who serve Verona may also cover Montclair, West Orange, Roseland and Glen Ridge. Every profile lists its towns, so if your parent lives in Verona and you live in Glen Ridge, you can find a pro who covers both, or simply filter for your parent's town and see who has said yes to it.
Yes. Visits usually take place at home, but they can also happen nearby. An art teacher might set up by the arched footbridge at Verona Park, at Bloomfield and Lakeside Avenues, when the trees around the lake turn in October. A yoga instructor might lead a chair class on the lawn on a mild morning. The visit can always stay home on a hot, icy or windy day.
Visits usually take place at home, but they can also happen nearby: a card game on a bench at Verona Park, an art lesson near the rose garden at Kip's Castle Park, or a tech help visit at the Verona Public Library on Gould Street. Talk through the plan with our team when we call to set up the first visit.

Yes. Once you find someone who clicks, you can book the same pro at the same time each week. A standing Thursday morning yoga class or Sunday afternoon piano lesson is easy to plan around, and your parent gets to know one person rather than meeting someone new each time.
After you request a visit, someone from the Home Happenings team calls within one business day to set it up.
