Glen Ridge houses are lovely and full of stairs. Front steps, a long staircase to the bedrooms, steep steps to the basement. A Home Happenings trainer comes to your home and works on the strength and balance that make those stairs easier, using your own house as the gym.
Build strength, balance and confidence with movements chosen for you.

Many trainers start with the house itself. Where does your parent hold on going up? Which step is the tall one? Is there a railing on both sides? Then the exercises follow from that: step ups on the bottom stair, heel raises at the counter, standing from a chair without using hands, a few minutes of balance work near a wall.
It's practical strength, the kind that makes carrying laundry up from the basement less of a project. Trainers keep it simple enough to do on your own between visits.
A trainer will also look at the little things around the house that make moving harder: a loose runner at the top of the stairs, a dim hallway, the step down into the sunroom that nobody notices anymore. They aren't home safety inspectors, but they'll mention what they see.
For walking, Hurrell Field has a quarter-mile all-weather track, which is about as easy as it gets for measuring progress. Laps are flat, there's no traffic, and you can stop at any point. A trainer might set a goal of one lap in week one and four laps by the end of the season.
Ridgewood Avenue runs the length of the borough, north to south, with sidewalks the whole way and the library and train station along it. Plenty of Glen Ridge seniors use it as their daily walk. A trainer can help you build up to a longer stretch of it, and work on the curb steps along the way.
Each trainer's profile says whether they bring a full kit, a few basics like bands and light weights, or work with what you have. For most people starting out, a sturdy chair, a wall, the stairs and the kitchen counter are plenty. Space isn't usually a problem in Glen Ridge homes.
Personal training isn't physical therapy, and it isn't medical. If your parent is recovering from surgery or a fall, get the doctor's go-ahead first and pass it on to the trainer. Trainers would much rather start too easy than too hard.
Trainers set their own rate between $50 and $150 an hour. Visits are 1, 1.5 or 2 hours, and an hour is typical. A weekly standing time works best, so families often book "every week until I cancel". A $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee are added at checkout, and the trainer's note after each visit says what was worked on and what to practice.
If you're booking for a parent from another state, message the trainer first about what you've noticed on visits home. Maybe Dad holds the wall now, or takes the stairs one at a time. That helps the trainer plan the very first session.
Choose a one hour, 1.5 hour or two hour visit. Each visit adds a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee. You pay when you book. Refunds follow our cancellation policy: free up to 3 days before. Every published professional completes an online search, a real conversation with our team, a signed provider agreement, a criminal background check through a screening vendor and a national sex offender registry check. The home address stays private until a visit is confirmed. Read profiles, compare open times and reviews, then book an open time straight from the calendar. Use Message to discuss your first visit.
Yes, that's one of the most common goals. Trainers work on leg strength, balance and safe technique on your own stairs. This isn't physical therapy, so if she's had a recent fall or surgery, check with her doctor first.
Many people notice small changes, like standing up from a chair more easily, after several weeks of steady practice. It depends on the person and how often they practice between visits. Trainers won't promise specific results, and neither do we.
Many trainers are happy to work with a couple in the same session. Ask in a message before booking. It's often more fun, and each person can do a version of the exercise that suits them.
Only if the trainer lives 20 or more miles from the home, in which case there's a $25 travel fee per visit. Most trainers who list Glen Ridge live nearby. The fee, if any, is shown before you book.
