5.0(11)Container vegetables, herbs and easy perennials
Roseland
Roseland yards have room for a real garden, but kneeling in the dirt for an afternoon gets harder every year. Home Happenings pairs older adults with local gardeners who work alongside them: raising the beds, potting up containers, sorting out the houseplants, and doing it at a height and pace that suits you.
Plant, prune and learn practical gardening skills at home.

Livingston
This isn't a landscaping crew. The pro works with you, so you're still the gardener. They'll do the heavy lifting, the bags of soil and the digging, and leave the planting, pruning and deciding to you. Plenty of people who'd given up gardening find they can keep going once someone else handles the parts that hurt.
Every plan starts with what you can comfortably do. If kneeling is out, the work moves to raised beds, a potting bench or large containers on the patio. If getting outside is hard, it moves to houseplants and windowsill herbs.
The first visit is usually a walk around the yard together. What's working, what's become too much, what you'd love to grow again. From there the gardener suggests a plan for the next few visits, starting with whatever gives you the most pleasure for the least strain.
Right now, in mid October, is a good time to plant bulbs for spring, cut back tired perennials and bring tender plants inside before the first frost. In late winter a gardener can help start seeds on a sunny sill. Spring is for setting up beds; summer is mostly watering, picking and keeping ahead of the weeds.
Roseland borders Becker Park and the other county land along the Livingston line, which is kept largely natural. Anyone who's gardened here knows what that means: deer and rabbits. A good local gardener will talk through what they leave alone and how to protect the rest.
Not much. The gardener will look at what you have and suggest what's worth buying. It helps to know where the hose is, where you'd like a bed or containers, and roughly what you want to grow. Tomatoes and basil? Flowers to cut? Something low-effort that comes back every year?
A comfortable seat outside matters more than most tools. So does a hat.
If you've grown vegetables for years and want to keep going, say so. A gardener can help plan a smaller, more manageable version of the old plot, perhaps two raised beds instead of a whole corner of the yard, with paths wide enough for a stool or a walker.
Each gardener sets an hourly rate between $50 and $150. Gardening often fits a 1.5 or 2 hour visit, since there's setup and cleanup. Families pay a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee at checkout. Many people book every week through the growing season and cancel when it ends.
Choose a one hour, 1.5 hour or two hour visit. Each visit adds a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee. You pay when you book. Refunds follow our cancellation policy: free up to 3 days before. Every published professional completes an online search, a real conversation with our team, a signed provider agreement, a criminal background check through a screening vendor and a national sex offender registry check. The home address stays private until a visit is confirmed. Read profiles, compare open times and reviews, then book an open time straight from the calendar. Use Message to discuss your first visit.
Yes. Raised beds at waist height, tabletop planters and large containers let you plant, weed and pick while standing or sitting. A gardener can help set these up over a few visits so most of the work afterward happens at a comfortable height.
No. Fall is a good time to plant spring bulbs, divide perennials, clean up beds and plan next year. It's also the right season to move potted plants indoors and get houseplants in shape for winter. There's always something to do.
It varies by pro. Some bring tools; supplies like soil, pots and plants are usually bought for your garden. Message the gardener before booking to sort out what they bring and what you'll need to pick up or order.
Gardeners set their own rate between $50 and $150 an hour, with 1, 1.5 or 2 hour visits. There's a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee at checkout, and a $25 travel fee per visit if the gardener lives 20 or more miles away.
