South Orange
Not everyone who lives in South Orange's village center wants to eat out every night, even with so many choices steps from home. Home Happenings sends local cooks into South Orange kitchens to teach older adults to cook, one recipe at a time, with their own pans and at their own pace.
Learn a recipe and cooking techniques in your own kitchen.

A cooking lesson is hands-on. The cook explains, demonstrates a little, and then you do the work, with help whenever you want it. At the end you have dinner, leftovers and a recipe you can make again.
Some people come in as complete beginners, often men who never had to cook. Others are lifelong cooks adjusting to cooking for one, or to a doctor's advice about salt or sugar. The cook will shape lessons around that.
A typical lesson looks like this: the cook arrives, you look at the recipe together, chop and measure side by side, and cook one dish from start to finish. Somewhere in there you talk about other things. By the end, the kitchen is clean, there's food on the table, and the recipe is written in big print to keep.
If you live in one of the apartment buildings near the station, the kitchen may be compact. A good cook will plan recipes that fit: one-pan dishes, sheet-pan dinners, soups that freeze well. Not every dish needs every burner.
In bigger houses with grown kids coming home on the train for holidays, a few lessons ahead of time can make hosting feel manageable again.
Cooks can also help you plan a week of meals so the fridge isn't full of food that goes off before you eat it.
South Orange families come from everywhere, and so do their recipes. Lessons can be about recovering a parent's dish, from Italian Sunday gravy to Caribbean rice and peas to a grandmother's babka. A cook works from memory, old recipe cards and a couple of test runs.
The South Orange Public Library has cookbooks to borrow if you want to try something new between lessons.
Food stories tend to come out while cooking, and some families ask the cook to note down where a recipe came from, who made it first, and how it changed over the years.
Cooks set their own hourly rate between $50 and $150. Lessons are usually 1.5 or 2 hours, enough to cook, taste and clean up. Groceries are separate. There's a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee at checkout, and cancellation is free up to 3 days before.
Book a single lesson to try it, or four weeks at the same time to build a small set of go-to meals. After each lesson the cook writes a short note the family can read.
Choose a one hour, 1.5 hour or two hour visit. Each visit adds a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee. You pay when you book. Refunds follow our cancellation policy: free up to 3 days before. Every published professional completes an online search, a real conversation with our team, a signed provider agreement, a criminal background check through a screening vendor and a national sex offender registry check. The home address stays private until a visit is confirmed. Read profiles, compare open times and reviews, then book an open time straight from the calendar. Use Message to discuss your first visit.
Yes. Cooks adjust to the space, choosing recipes that use one pot or one pan and a small amount of counter. Mention the kitchen size when you message them so they plan the right dish and don't bring more than will fit.
Absolutely. A cook will start with the basics, like eggs, a simple pasta or a roast chicken, and build from there. Most beginners are making a few reliable meals within four to six weekly lessons.
Groceries are separate from the visit price. Usually the cook sends a list and you buy the ingredients, or you agree on another arrangement. Sort it out in messages before the first lesson so nobody's surprised.
