Plenty of Verona living rooms have an upright piano that nobody has opened in years, or a guitar leaning in a closet. Home Happenings matches older adults in Verona with local music teachers who come to the house, sit at that same piano, and start from wherever the student actually is.

Most first visits are part lesson, part conversation. The teacher asks what music the student grew up with, what they played before (if anything), and what they would like to be able to play by spring. Then they get hands on keys or strings. A returning pianist might work through a simple hymn or a Sinatra standard. A true beginner might learn where middle C lives and play a short melody with the right hand before the hour is up.
Guitar lessons start with posture, tuning and two or three easy chords. Stiff fingers are common, and good teachers adjust: lighter strings, a capo, shorter practice stretches. Nobody is in a rush.
Piano and guitar are lessons in the plain sense: learning to play. Music therapy is different. On Home Happenings it is only offered by board-certified music therapists (MT-BC), and those credentials are verified by our team before the option appears on a profile. Families sometimes look at music therapy for a parent who is less interested in technique and more interested in singing, rhythm and familiar songs. Read each profile and message the pro if you are not sure which fits.
Teachers list their usual days and the towns they serve, so you can see who already works in Verona and nearby Cedar Grove and Montclair.
Verona has a long habit of music outdoors. In summer there are concerts at the gazebo in Verona Park, and a student who has been working on a tune all week tends to listen to the band a little differently. The Verona Public Library on Gould Street is a handy stop for sheet music books and songbooks to bring to the next lesson.
Some students like to practice a piece for a grandchild's visit or a family holiday. Telling the teacher about a goal like that early on helps them choose the right songs.
Each teacher sets an hourly rate between $50 and $150. You choose a 1, 1.5 or 2 hour visit, and a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee are added at checkout. Weekly lessons are the most common pattern: book "4 weeks, same time" or "every week until I cancel". After each visit the teacher writes a short note about what was covered, which is a nice way for family to follow along.
If a lesson day has to move, you can reschedule or cancel for free up to 3 days before. Between 3 days and 12 hours, half the visit is charged, and under 12 hours the full price applies.
Choose a one hour, 1.5 hour or two hour visit. Each visit adds a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee. You pay when you book. Refunds follow our cancellation policy: free up to 3 days before. Every published professional completes an online search, a real conversation with our team, a signed provider agreement, a criminal background check through a screening vendor and a national sex offender registry check. The home address stays private until a visit is confirmed. Read profiles, compare open times and reviews, then book an open time straight from the calendar. Use Message to discuss your first visit.
For piano, yes, the student needs an instrument at home. A keyboard with full-size keys works fine to start. Guitar teachers can often advise on a beginner instrument before the first lesson if you message them through Home Happenings.
Lots of people start or restart later in life. Progress may be slower in some ways, but older students tend to practice with real patience. A good teacher picks songs the student loves, which keeps the lessons fun week to week.
Lessons teach someone to play. Music therapy on Home Happenings is offered only by board-certified MT-BC therapists and focuses on singing, rhythm and engagement with music. It is not a medical treatment promise, so ask the therapist directly about their approach.
You choose 1, 1.5 or 2 hours when you book. Most seniors start with one hour. Longer visits can suit someone who wants to play duets with the teacher or work on a bigger piece.
