You don't need a studio to paint. A kitchen table, decent light and someone patient beside you is plenty. Home Happenings art teachers come to homes across Bloomfield and teach drawing, watercolor and other basics, usually with the supplies in their bag, so all you have to do is clear a little space.
Learn drawing, watercolor and other art techniques at home.

Most first visits start small. A pencil, a few shapes, a piece of fruit on a plate. The teacher watches how you hold the pencil and what you notice, then shows you one or two things that make a drawing look right, like where the shadow falls. By the end of the hour you have something you made, and it usually looks better than you expected.
Watercolor tends to come a few weeks in. It's forgiving once you learn to let the paint do some of the work, and frustrating before that. A teacher who has done this with beginners will warn you about the frustrating part, which helps.
The Essex County Rose Garden in Brookdale Park has hundreds of bushes and blooms hardest in June and again in September. A phone photo from a walk there can become a whole month of watercolor practice at home. Teachers like working from a picture the student took, because it means something to the person holding the brush.
Oakeside, the old Oakes mansion on Belleville Avenue that is now the township's cultural center, is another good subject. So is the Bloomfield Green with the church steeple behind the trees. Some people prefer what's out their own window: the maple across the street, the porch rail, a cat on the sill.
Art lessons are a good fit for someone who likes quiet focus and wants something to show for an afternoon. They also work well for a parent who has slowed down physically but still wants to make things. You can draw sitting down, at your own pace, and stop when your hand is tired.
It's not only for people who were "good at art" in school. Plenty of students say they couldn't draw a straight line. That's not really what drawing is about, and a teacher will show you why in the first visit.
A table near a window, some paper towels and a spot where things can be left to dry. Ask in a message whether the teacher brings supplies, since most do, and whether they leave practice materials behind. Contact information stays private in messages, so you can ask anything before booking.
Rates run $50 to $150 an hour, set by each teacher, with visits of 1, 1.5 or 2 hours. Many people book four weeks at the same time to see if it sticks.
Choose a one hour, 1.5 hour or two hour visit. Each visit adds a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee. You pay when you book. Refunds follow our cancellation policy: free up to 3 days before. Every published professional completes an online search, a real conversation with our team, a signed provider agreement, a criminal background check through a screening vendor and a national sex offender registry check. The home address stays private until a visit is confirmed. Read profiles, compare open times and reviews, then book an open time straight from the calendar. Use Message to discuss your first visit.
Most teachers on Home Happenings bring paper, pencils, brushes and paints for lessons, and some leave a starter kit for practice. Each profile says what they bring. If it's not clear, send a message before you book and ask.
Often, yes. Teachers adjust with thicker pencils, bigger paper, looser styles and watercolor techniques that don't need fine control. Mention it in a message beforehand so the teacher can plan. Lessons are a hobby, not a therapy or medical service.
You can book 1, 1.5 or 2 hours. An hour is plenty for most beginners. Watercolor students sometimes prefer 1.5 hours so there's time to let layers dry and come back to the painting before the visit ends.
Yes. Home Happenings gift cards come in any amount from $50, and the person receiving it can pick the teacher and time that suits them. It's a popular birthday present from grandkids who live out of town.
