Montclair has always been an artists' town, and you do not have to be a trained painter to be part of that. Home Happenings sends local art teachers to older adults' homes in Montclair for drawing, watercolor and other mediums, usually with supplies in hand, so the kitchen table becomes a studio for an afternoon.
Learn drawing, watercolor and other art techniques at home.

Your teacher will probably arrive with a bag of paper, pencils and a small watercolor set, then ask what you like to look at. Flowers, faces, buildings, the view out the back window. The first hour tends to be about seeing: how light falls on a pear, why a shadow is not just gray.
Nobody expects a masterpiece. A good first lesson ends with one small study you are a little proud of and a sense of what to try next. Many teachers leave a practice sheet so you can keep going between visits.
There is no shortage of subjects here. The Montclair Art Museum on South Mountain Avenue has a strong American and Native American collection, and plenty of students go see a painting and then try to copy its colors at home. Photographs taken at Van Vleck House and Gardens in spring make wonderful reference for watercolor.
If walking is easy, a teacher might suggest sketching porches and storefronts in Upper Montclair from a bench. If it is not, a photo on a tablet works just as well.
Montclair also has a long tradition of working artists, and that spirit rubs off. Some students find it motivating to visit the museum every few months and see how a painter handled the same subject they are working on. Others prefer to keep it entirely at home. Both are fine.
Art lessons work well for people who like quiet focus and a bit of conversation. They suit someone who used to paint and stopped, a retired architect or engineer who loves precise line work, or a person who has never drawn and always wondered if they could.
Shaky hands or low vision are not deal breakers. Teachers can move to bigger paper, thicker brushes, bold markers or loose watercolor where wobbles become part of the style. Say what you need when you message, and the teacher can plan for it.
Teachers set their own rate between $50 and $150 an hour, and lessons can be 1, 1.5 or 2 hours. There is a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee at checkout. Book one lesson to try it, four weeks at the same time, or a standing weekly slot.
Each profile lists the mediums a teacher covers, the towns they serve, their usual days and reviews from other families. After every visit you get a short note, which is a nice way for a son or daughter to see what Dad painted this week.
Choose a one hour, 1.5 hour or two hour visit. Each visit adds a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee. You pay when you book. Refunds follow our cancellation policy: free up to 3 days before. Every published professional completes an online search, a real conversation with our team, a signed provider agreement, a criminal background check through a screening vendor and a national sex offender registry check. The home address stays private until a visit is confirmed. Read profiles, compare open times and reviews, then book an open time straight from the calendar. Use Message to discuss your first visit.
Many do, and it is common for teachers to bring paper, paints and brushes for the first few lessons. Their profile or a quick message will tell you what is included and what you might want to buy once you know which medium you enjoy.
A table with good light near a window, a cup of water, some paper towels and a surface you do not mind getting a little paint on. A comfortable chair with arms helps for longer lessons.
Yes, and those students are often the happiest. Drawing is a skill you learn, and teachers start with simple shapes and shading. The goal is enjoyment and progress you can see, not talent.
Yes. You can create the account, message teachers, book and pay from anywhere. Your father does not need to use the app, and you will read the teacher's note after every visit.
