Private yoga and chair yoga at home in Bloomfield, NJ

Yoga for older adults is mostly about moving a little more freely and breathing a little slower. A Home Happenings instructor comes to your home in Bloomfield for gentle or chair yoga, so there's no getting down onto a crowded studio floor, no parking on Broad Street, and no one watching but the teacher.

Practice gentle yoga and breathing with clear, personal instruction.

Chair yoga is real yoga

People are sometimes skeptical of chair yoga until they try it. You sit tall, stretch your arms and sides, twist gently, work your ankles and wrists, and finish with a few minutes of slow breathing. It's quieter than a gym class and it can leave you feeling looser for the rest of the day.

Gentle yoga on a mat is an option for people who can get up and down from the floor comfortably. The instructor will ask, and watch, and suggest the version that fits. Nobody needs to touch their toes.

Small spaces are fine

A lot of Bloomfield seniors live in apartments or in one floor of a two-family house. That's plenty of room. A solid chair without arms or wheels, enough space to stretch your arms out to the sides, and a window you can open in nice weather is about all you need.

Some instructors like to finish with breathing near a window or on a porch. On a spring day, a short walk to Brookdale Park afterward, where the big meadow gives you room to breathe, is a nice way to keep the calm going.

Instructors often leave a short routine on a card or a sheet of paper, five or six moves to do on the mornings in between. People who do even ten minutes of that tend to feel the difference sooner than people who wait for the next visit.

What changes over a few weeks

The first session is mostly learning the moves and the breathing. By the third or fourth, it starts to feel familiar, and the instructor can add a little. Many people notice they're reaching the high shelf more easily or turning their head to back out of the driveway without as much effort. That's the kind of progress to expect, modest and real.

Yoga isn't a medical treatment, and instructors won't promise it fixes anything. If you have a joint replacement or back trouble, say so in a message first.

Booking

Instructors set their hourly rate between $50 and $150. Most yoga visits are an hour, though 1.5 hours is available. You can book a single session, four weeks at the same time, or every week until you cancel. A $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee are added at checkout, and after each visit the instructor leaves a short note the family can read.

If you'd like to try it before committing, a single visit is a good start. Plenty of families book one session to see whether Mom enjoys it, then switch to a standing weekly time once she does.

How visits work

Choose a one hour, 1.5 hour or two hour visit. Each visit adds a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee. You pay when you book. Refunds follow our cancellation policy: free up to 3 days before. Every published professional completes an online search, a real conversation with our team, a signed provider agreement, a criminal background check through a screening vendor and a national sex offender registry check. The home address stays private until a visit is confirmed. Read profiles, compare open times and reviews, then book an open time straight from the calendar. Use Message to discuss your first visit.

Questions seniors and families ask

Can someone in a wheelchair do chair yoga?

Often yes. Many chair yoga moves work seated in a wheelchair with the brakes on, focusing on arms, shoulders, neck and breathing. Tell the instructor in a message beforehand so they can plan the session around it.

What should my mom wear?

Anything comfortable she can move in, like soft pants and a loose top. Bare feet or socks with grips are best. No special mat is required for chair yoga, though some instructors bring one for gentle floor work.

How is in-home yoga different from a class at a studio?

It's one on one, so the instructor can slow down, skip what doesn't suit you and repeat what does. There's no travel, no stairs to a studio and no comparing yourself to the person on the next mat.

If we need to cancel, is there a fee?

Cancelling is free up to 3 days before the visit. Between 3 days and 12 hours before, 50% is charged. Under 12 hours, it's the full visit price, since the instructor has held that time for you.
