Cooking for one is a different skill from cooking for a family of six. Home Happenings sends local cooks to older adults' homes in Caldwell to cook together in the person's own kitchen, one recipe at a time. The lessons use the stove, pans and counter space they already have, so the recipe works again next Tuesday without help.

The cook and the student pick a recipe ahead of time by message. It might be something new, a healthier take on an old favorite, or a family dish nobody has made since Grandma. The cook brings or helps shop for the ingredients, then they make it together, with the student doing as much of the work as feels right.
At the end there is a meal, often with leftovers for the next day, and a written copy of the recipe, sometimes in large print.
Widowers who never did much cooking and want to stop living on takeout. Lifelong cooks who now find standing at the stove tiring and want easier methods. People with new dietary goals from their doctor, who want help turning a list of foods into dinners they actually like.
Cooks are not dietitians, and they will not give medical advice. But they are good at adapting recipes, like making something less salty, softer to chew, or quicker to put together.
Kitchen setup matters as much as the recipe. A cook might suggest moving the most used pots to a lower shelf, keeping a stool by the counter for sitting while chopping, or switching to a lighter pan. These small changes make it easier to keep cooking on the days when no lesson is booked. Some students like to cook a double batch so there is a second meal ready in the freezer for later in the week.
Part of a lesson can be a short trip for ingredients. Downtown Caldwell along Bloomfield Avenue has cafes and small shops, so a cook might suggest picking up fresh bread or cheese on the way in. Back home, the lesson covers how to store everything so it lasts.
For new ideas, the Caldwell Public Library in its new downtown building has cookbooks, and borrowing one to choose next week's recipe is a nice small outing.
Cooks set their hourly rate between $50 and $150. Most lessons are 1.5 or 2 hours to allow time for prep, cooking and cleanup. Checkout adds a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee to each visit. Ingredients are separate, and the cook will explain how they handle shopping.
Weekly lessons build up a small collection of reliable recipes. Book "4 weeks, same time" to try it out. After each visit, the cook writes a short note about what was made.
Choose a one hour, 1.5 hour or two hour visit. Each visit adds a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee. You pay when you book. Refunds follow our cancellation policy: free up to 3 days before. Every published professional completes an online search, a real conversation with our team, a signed provider agreement, a criminal background check through a screening vendor and a national sex offender registry check. The home address stays private until a visit is confirmed. Read profiles, compare open times and reviews, then book an open time straight from the calendar. Use Message to discuss your first visit.
Ingredients are separate from the lesson price. Some cooks shop ahead and ask to be paid back, others shop with the student or send a list. Agree on the approach by message before the first visit.
Yes, adapting recipes is a big part of the job. Share any diet guidance from his doctor in a message. Cooks are not dietitians, but they can turn guidance into real meals he will want to eat.
Most are 1.5 or 2 hours, which allows time to prep, cook, eat a little and clean up. Simple recipes or a shorter attention span can work with 1 hour.
No. The point is to cook with what is in your kitchen. If a key tool is missing, like a decent knife or a sheet pan, the cook may suggest getting one for future lessons.
