Piano and guitar lessons at home in Livingston, NJ

Plenty of Livingston residents have spent years in the audience, at symphony concerts and summer nights by the gazebo in Memorial Park. A Home Happenings music teacher comes to your home and puts you on the other side of it, learning piano or guitar at your own pace, in your own living room.

Learn an instrument, sing favorite songs or explore music at your pace.

From listener to player

People who love music but never played often assume they've missed their chance. They haven't. A teacher will usually start with a piece you already know by ear, because hearing it in your head makes learning it much easier. On piano, that might be a simple right hand melody in the first lesson. On guitar, two chords and a strum.

Livingston has a long musical streak. The Livingston Symphony Orchestra has been playing since 1956, and the free summer concerts at the Memorial Park gazebo draw a crowd every July. Going to a concert after a few months of lessons is a different experience. You start noticing what the pianist's left hand is doing.

Piano, guitar or music therapy

Piano is the most popular choice, partly because so many Livingston homes already have one. Guitar suits people who want to sing, or who like the idea of something portable to play on the deck. Teachers can help you pick, and some teach both.

Music therapy is a separate option. On Home Happenings it's offered only by board-certified music therapists (MT-BC), and their credential is marked verified once our team confirms it. Music therapists use music toward personal goals, which is different from lessons, and it doesn't replace medical treatment.

What a few months looks like

Most adult beginners practice ten to twenty minutes a day. After a month, simple songs start to come together. After three or four months, many people can play a few pieces they're proud of, and some start asking about duets with a grandchild who's also taking lessons.

Teachers adjust as you go. If a piece is frustrating, they'll find an easier arrangement. If you're flying, they'll add something harder. Nobody is grading you.

Some teachers also suggest recording yourself on a phone once a month. Listening back to the first recording after a season of lessons is one of the most encouraging things a beginner can do.

Booking

Teachers set their own rate between $50 and $150 an hour. Visits are 1, 1.5 or 2 hours, and most beginners start with an hour. You can book one lesson to try it, four weeks at the same time, or every week until you cancel. There's a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee at checkout, and a $25 travel fee only if the teacher lives 20 or more miles from your home.

After each lesson, the teacher writes a short note. If you're a grown child booking for a parent, it's how you find out what song they're learning before they play it for you.

How visits work

Choose a one hour, 1.5 hour or two hour visit. Each visit adds a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee. You pay when you book. Refunds follow our cancellation policy: free up to 3 days before. Every published professional completes an online search, a real conversation with our team, a signed provider agreement, a criminal background check through a screening vendor and a national sex offender registry check. The home address stays private until a visit is confirmed. Read profiles, compare open times and reviews, then book an open time straight from the calendar. Use Message to discuss your first visit.

Questions seniors and families ask

Can a complete beginner in their 80s learn piano?

Yes. Progress may be slower than for a child, but older beginners tend to practice with real purpose. Teachers pick music you love and keep lessons short and steady. The goal is enjoying playing, not passing exams.

Does my mother need a real piano or will a keyboard work?

A full-size keyboard with weighted keys works well for beginners and takes less space than a piano. An existing piano is great too, even if it needs tuning. The teacher can suggest what makes sense after the first lesson.

How do I find a music therapist in Livingston?

How much are in-home music lessons?

Each teacher sets an hourly rate between $50 and $150, and you choose a 1, 1.5 or 2 hour visit at that rate. There's a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee at checkout as well. The full price is shown before you book.
