The first session is mostly getting to know you. What do you want to do more easily? Walk to the Village and back. Get down to play with a grandchild and get back up. Carry the recycling to the curb. Trainers then test a few simple moves, like standing from a chair and balancing on one foot near a counter.
From there they build a routine you can do in the living room. Short, clear, and gradually harder.
Each trainer lists whether they bring a full kit, a few basics or use what you have at home. A full kit might mean resistance bands, light weights and a balance pad. Using what you have might mean a kitchen chair, a towel and the bottom step of your stairs.
Either way works. What matters most is showing up every week.
Some trainers leave a simple chart on the fridge with three or four moves to do between visits, with pictures or plain notes. Ten minutes a day is usually enough. The next session starts by checking how those went, and the trainer adjusts the plan. Little by little, the moves that felt hard in week one become the warm-up.
Memorial Park has paths that are good for steady walking once you feel ready, and plenty of benches for rest breaks. The Maplewood Senior Center on Burnett Avenue, next to DeHart Park, runs fitness and other programs, and some clients use home training to build up to joining a class there.
Trainers can add short walking goals between visits. A block more each week is a real gain.
Training at home also helps on days when getting out is not realistic, like icy January mornings or very hot July afternoons. The routine keeps going indoors, so you do not lose the progress you built. When spring comes, many clients are surprised how ready they feel for a longer walk around Memorial Park.
This is personal training, not physical therapy, and it is not medical. If a doctor or therapist has given guidance, share it with the trainer.
Trainers set an hourly rate from $50 to $150, and sessions are 1, 1.5 or 2 hours. Checkout adds a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee. Choose a one hour, 1.5 hour or two hour visit. Each visit adds a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee. You pay when you book. Refunds follow our cancellation policy: free up to 3 days before. Every published professional completes an online search, a real conversation with our team, a signed provider agreement, a criminal background check through a screening vendor and a national sex offender registry check. The home address stays private until a visit is confirmed. Read profiles, compare open times and reviews, then book an open time straight from the calendar. Use Message to discuss your first visit.
A physical therapist is a licensed clinician who treats injuries and conditions. A personal trainer helps healthy older adults build strength, balance and mobility. Home Happenings trainers do not provide physical therapy or medical treatment.
Many trainers work with people who use a walker or cane, focusing on seated strength work and supported balance practice. Mention the walker when you message so the trainer can plan.
It varies. Many people notice that standing up or climbing stairs feels a bit easier after several weeks of regular sessions. Weekly training plus a few moves between visits tends to help most.
Yes. Couples often book together and the trainer adapts moves for each person. The hourly rate covers the session, so ask the trainer if they are comfortable working with two.
