Short Hills
A lot of Short Hills homes are older and have plenty of stairs. A trainer working in the house can practice exactly what you need: the step up into the front hall, getting up from the low sofa, reaching the top kitchen shelf safely. That's hard to replicate at a gym.
Trainers describe on their profiles whether they bring a full kit, a few basics, or work with what you have. A sturdy chair and a wall go a long way.
Training at home also takes the logistics out of it. No driving, no parking, no changing room. For a lot of older adults that's the difference between exercising regularly and meaning to.
Once the basics are solid, many trainers like to take a session outdoors on a nice day. Old Short Hills Park, on Old Short Hills Road beside Greenwood Gardens, has a big open field and a bench overlooking the pond, so there's a natural place to rest between laps. Its trails connect toward South Mountain Reservation, which is a longer goal for later.
In winter, a lot of people walk indoors instead. The Mall at Short Hills is enormous, it's flat, and there's always a bench. A trainer can help turn a shopping trip into a planned walk.
Short Hills has a lot of hills, as the name suggests, and many streets don't have much flat ground. That's worth telling a trainer about if your goal is to walk the neighborhood again. They can work on the leg strength and stamina that a slope demands, a little at a time, before you try the real thing.
Personal training on Home Happenings is general fitness. It isn't physical therapy, and trainers don't diagnose or treat medical conditions. Check with your doctor if you have a heart condition, recent surgery or a history of falls, and pass along anything you've been told to avoid.
Many people come to a trainer after finishing physical therapy, wanting to keep the progress going.
Trainers set their own hourly rate between $50 and $150. Sessions can be 1, 1.5 or 2 hours; an hour is plenty for most. A $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee apply at checkout. Cancellation is free up to 3 days before. Weekly sessions give the best results.
Trainers will often adjust the plan every few weeks as you get stronger. The aim is always the same: everyday life feeling a bit easier than it did last month.
Choose a one hour, 1.5 hour or two hour visit. Each visit adds a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee. You pay when you book. Refunds follow our cancellation policy: free up to 3 days before. Every published professional completes an online search, a real conversation with our team, a signed provider agreement, a criminal background check through a screening vendor and a national sex offender registry check. The home address stays private until a visit is confirmed. Read profiles, compare open times and reviews, then book an open time straight from the calendar. Use Message to discuss your first visit.
Mostly getting to know you: your health history as you choose to share it, a few simple movement checks like standing from a chair, and talking through goals. Then some gentle exercises. Expect to feel like you did something, not exhausted.
Strength and balance work is a common goal after a fall, but talk to a doctor first, especially if the fall was recent or caused an injury. A trainer is not a medical provider. Share any instructions with them and they'll work within those limits.
Each trainer says on their profile whether they bring a full kit, a few basics like bands and light weights, or use what you already have. Read the profile, and if space is tight, mention it so they bring the right things.
