North Caldwell is a quiet place, and quiet is a good start for yoga. Home Happenings sends local yoga instructors to older adults' homes in North Caldwell for chair yoga, gentle mat work and slow breathing. Sessions fit the person: seated, standing at the back of a chair, or on the floor, with as many breaks as needed.
Practice gentle yoga and breathing with clear, personal instruction.

Chair yoga and balance
Caldwell
People who come to yoga later in life usually want one of a few things: to feel less stiff in the morning, to move more freely when getting in and out of the car, or to have a calm hour in the week. Some tried a class years ago and found it too fast. Others have never done any yoga and only know the pretzel poses from magazines.
Chair yoga suits all of them. Most of the session happens seated or holding a chair, with simple stretches for the neck, shoulders, hips and ankles, followed by breathing and a rest.
North Caldwell houses tend to have the space: a den, a sunroom, a spot in the living room with a window onto the trees. The instructor needs a sturdy chair without wheels and enough room to stretch arms out to the sides. Morning light helps, and so does turning off the TV.
Instructors notice how the person moves and adjust in the moment. If a shoulder is sore, they skip the overhead reach. If balance is shaky, standing poses happen with both hands on the chair.
After a few weeks, most students can do a short routine on their own. Some like to practice a few breaths outside, on a bench or a porch. Walker's Park on Mountain Avenue, with its pond, is a peaceful spot the borough has kept as open space, and the edge of Hilltop Reservation is close for those who drive.
Instructors might leave a printed sequence with pictures, or a short audio recording for days between visits. Yoga is not medical treatment, but regular practice is a pleasant way to stay limber.
Some students also enjoy simple hand and finger stretches, which come in handy for gardening, typing or holding a book. Instructors fold these into the end of a session. Over time people tend to remember a favorite stretch or two and do them without thinking, perhaps while waiting for the kettle or sitting at a red light on Route 527.
Instructors decide their own hourly rate, between $50 and $150. You can book 1, 1.5 or 2 hours, and each visit adds a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee. One hour once a week is the usual pattern.
Choose "every week until I cancel" for a steady slot. Canceling is free with at least 3 days' notice. After each session the instructor leaves a short written note the family can see.
Choose a one hour, 1.5 hour or two hour visit. Each visit adds a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee. You pay when you book. Refunds follow our cancellation policy: free up to 3 days before. Every published professional completes an online search, a real conversation with our team, a signed provider agreement, a criminal background check through a screening vendor and a national sex offender registry check. The home address stays private until a visit is confirmed. Read profiles, compare open times and reviews, then book an open time straight from the calendar. Use Message to discuss your first visit.
Yes. Chair yoga moves every major joint, builds some strength in the legs and core, and includes balance work at the chair. It is gentler than a gym class, which is the point for many older adults.
Many instructors are happy to teach a couple in the same session. Message the instructor to confirm before booking. The price is the instructor's hourly rate for the visit, plus the per visit fees.
Tell the instructor in advance. They will skip movements that bother her and focus on gentle, supported positions. Yoga is not a treatment for back pain, so check with her doctor if pain is new or severe.
Some bring mats, blocks and straps. Others work only with a chair. Profiles usually say. For chair yoga, a sturdy kitchen or dining chair without arms is often all that is needed.
