5.0(18)American mahjong and canasta for new tables
Livingston
Card tables are coming back out in West Caldwell. Home Happenings sends local game pros to older adults' homes to teach mahjong, bridge and canasta to a group, or to sit down for a real weekly chess game. You gather the players, the pro brings the tiles or cards and teaches until everyone can play on their own.
Mahjong, bridge, canasta, or someone to play a real game of chess with.

Neighborhood and family life stories

Mahjong and canasta need four players, and the group is up to you. Friends from the neighborhood, a sister, a cousin, a couple from church. The Caldwell-West Caldwell Senior Club, open to residents of both towns aged 55 and up, has met at the West Caldwell Public Library on Clinton Road, and is a natural place to meet someone who has always wanted to learn mahjong.
These two games require booking at least 4 visits, so the group has time to learn properly.
The pro starts by laying out the tiles and explaining the suits, the honors and the jokers. Then comes the Charleston, the passing ritual that starts each American mahjong hand, and a practice game played open so everyone can see. By the third or fourth visit, groups usually play full games with the pro coaching quietly.
Canasta follows a similar path: melds, wild cards, and how to go out, then practice hands until it clicks.
Bridge suits people who enjoy a challenge and a bit of strategy talk afterward. A pro can teach beginners, refresh experienced players, or fill in as the fourth.
With chess, the main thing is a real opponent across the board every week. The pro plays at a fair level, talks through the interesting moments, and can teach openings and tactics if wanted.
Groups often develop their own traditions over a few weeks: who brings the snacks, who keeps score, where the coffee is set out. Pros encourage that, because the goal is a game that keeps going after the lessons end. For mahjong in particular, a pro can explain the yearly card and how hands change each spring, which keeps experienced players interested. If a group outgrows the lessons, the pro can stay on as an occasional coach or step back entirely. Either way, players usually end up with a regular weekly game of their own, and a reason to see each other every week.
Game pros choose their own hourly rate, from $50 to $150. Game visits are often 1.5 or 2 hours. Families also pay a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee per visit. The price is per visit, not per player, so groups often split it.
Book "4 weeks, same time" for mahjong or canasta, or "every week until I cancel" for bridge and chess. If the group needs to skip a week, cancel free up to 3 days before.
Choose a one hour, 1.5 hour or two hour visit. Each visit adds a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee. You pay when you book. Refunds follow our cancellation policy: free up to 3 days before. Every published professional completes an online search, a real conversation with our team, a signed provider agreement, a criminal background check through a screening vendor and a national sex offender registry check. The home address stays private until a visit is confirmed. Read profiles, compare open times and reviews, then book an open time straight from the calendar. Use Message to discuss your first visit.

Not to start. The pro brings the set for lessons. If the group keeps playing between visits, the pro can recommend a set and explain which yearly card to buy for American mahjong.
Yes. Bridge pros on Home Happenings teach beginners as well as returning players. Learning bridge takes several sessions, so plan for weekly visits. A pro can also fill in as the fourth player.
Talk to the pro by message. Mahjong and canasta need four players at the table, so you may need a substitute. Cancellations are free up to 3 days before a visit.
Many people enjoy a regular chess game as a way to stay sharp and social. It is not a medical treatment, but having a steady opponent and conversation each week is something many players look forward to.
