A smartphone can make life in Livingston a lot easier, from checking the shuttle schedule to ordering groceries, if someone shows you how. A Home Happenings tech helper comes to your home and goes one step at a time: phones, tablets, video calls, photos, useful apps and spotting scams.
Learn your phone, tablet and video calls, one step at a time.

For seniors who have stopped driving or drive less, the phone can fill gaps. A helper can show your parent how to use a map app, how to call a ride, and how to check train times at South Orange station. Livingston has had a free shuttle, the Livingston Express, between the Livingston Mall and South Orange station, and a helper can show how to look up its current schedule online.
Grocery and pharmacy apps are another common request. The helper sets them up, practices an order with your parent, and writes the steps down.
Many Livingston grandparents have kids and grandkids spread across the country. Video calls are how they stay close. A helper can set up the app your family uses, adjust the volume and text size, and practice calls until your parent can start one alone.
Photos are next. Finding the pictures the family sends, saving favorites, making an album, sending one back. Small things, done slowly and repeated until they stick.
Helpers also make the screen easier to use: bigger text, louder ringer, fewer apps on the home screen, favorites set up for the people your parent calls most. A tidy phone is less intimidating.
Scam calls, texts and emails are a constant. A helper can look at real examples on your parent's own phone and computer, point out the warning signs (pressure, secrecy, gift cards, requests for codes), and set up call and spam filtering. The most important habit is the simplest: when in doubt, hang up and call family.
The Livingston Public Library on Robert H. Harp Drive posts its events and resources online, and a helper can bookmark that page, along with a few other trusted local sites, so your parent knows where to look.
Helpers set their own rate between $50 and $150 an hour, and most tech visits are an hour. Book a single visit to fix a problem, four weeks at the same time to build skills, or every week until you cancel. You'll pay a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee at checkout. After each visit, the helper writes a note listing what was covered, which is especially useful for kids helping from out of state.
Before the first visit, make a list of what's confusing or not working. Gather chargers, passwords you know, and any new device still in the box. The hour then goes to learning, not searching drawers.
Choose a one hour, 1.5 hour or two hour visit. Each visit adds a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee. You pay when you book. Refunds follow our cancellation policy: free up to 3 days before. Every published professional completes an online search, a real conversation with our team, a signed provider agreement, a criminal background check through a screening vendor and a national sex offender registry check. The home address stays private until a visit is confirmed. Read profiles, compare open times and reviews, then book an open time straight from the calendar. Use Message to discuss your first visit.
Yes. Helpers can install a grocery or pharmacy app, set up the account with your mom, and practice placing an order together. They'll write down the steps so she can do it herself next time.
Book and pay online, then message the helper a list of what your dad is struggling with. After the visit you'll get a note about what was covered. Many families book a few weekly visits in a row.
Helpers focus on teaching your parent to use phones, tablets and computers, one step at a time. Many can sort out settings and simple problems too. For hardware repair, you'd likely need a repair shop.
Each helper sets an hourly rate between $50 and $150. Visits are 1, 1.5 or 2 hours at that rate, plus a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee at checkout. Cancel 3 or more days ahead and you pay nothing.
