The grandkids can fix your phone in thirty seconds, but they can't explain what they did. Home Happenings sends patient local tech helpers to homes in Roseland to show you, one step at a time, how to use your phone, tablet or computer for the things you actually want to do.
Learn your phone, tablet and video calls, one step at a time.

Nobody books tech help because they want to learn about settings. They want to see the grandchildren on a video call, read the news on a tablet, find the photo their daughter sent, or stop the phone making that noise. A good helper starts there and works backward.
Expect to do the tapping yourself. The helper explains, then you do it, then you do it again. Many helpers write out the steps on paper so you can follow them next week without anyone there.
Bring your questions as they come up during the week. A sticky note on the fridge that says 'how do I make the text bigger' is a perfectly good lesson plan, and helpers like having a list to work through.
The borough sends email updates for the Roseland Senior Society, which is how a lot of trip and luncheon news gets around. If you're not on email, or you are but never check it, that's a good first project. The borough website also has a senior citizen services page with transportation information and other programs, and a helper can bookmark it so it's one tap away.
The Roseland Free Public Library has more than books, and setting up a library account on a tablet can open up reading and listening from home. A helper can show you how to find it.
Scam calls, texts and emails are a real worry, and they're designed to make you panic. A helper can walk through what the common ones look like: the fake package delivery text, the call claiming to be from a bank or a government office, the message from a grandchild who suddenly needs money. The rule they'll teach is simple: hang up, and call back on a number you already trust.
They can also turn on settings that filter unknown callers and spam texts.
If a scam has already happened, don't be embarrassed. It happens to sharp, sensible people all the time. A helper can show you how to report it and change the passwords that matter, though for a bank account, call the bank directly on the number on your card.
Tech helpers set their own hourly rate between $50 and $150. One hour is usually enough to learn one or two things well without overload. A $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee apply. Weekly visits for a month tend to work better than one long session.
Choose a one hour, 1.5 hour or two hour visit. Each visit adds a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee. You pay when you book. Refunds follow our cancellation policy: free up to 3 days before. Every published professional completes an online search, a real conversation with our team, a signed provider agreement, a criminal background check through a screening vendor and a national sex offender registry check. The home address stays private until a visit is confirmed. Read profiles, compare open times and reviews, then book an open time straight from the calendar. Use Message to discuss your first visit.
The device, fully charged, and its charger. Have your passwords written down if you know them, especially the Apple ID or Google account and the Wi-Fi password. Write a short list of the things you'd like to learn so the time goes where you want it.
Yes, that's one of the most common requests. The helper can set up the app, add family contacts and practice a call with you. It helps to arrange for a family member to be available during the visit so you can make a real call together.
A helper can turn on call and text filtering, block numbers and show her how to recognize common scams. No setting stops every scam, so the most useful part is practicing what to do: don't answer pressure, hang up, and call a trusted number.
Every helper on Home Happenings is background checked and vetted by our team. Even so, you stay in control: a good helper has you type your own passwords and explains each step. You can message them first and read their profile and reviews before booking.
