Drawing is one of those things people say they gave up in fourth grade. It is never too late to pick it back up. Home Happenings connects older adults in Maplewood with local art teachers who come to the house for drawing, watercolor and more, usually bringing supplies so you can start right away.

Loose watercolor landscapes and flowers
Maplewood
Most drawing lessons start with learning to look properly. Your teacher might set a mug and an apple on the table and ask you to draw only the shadows. Or draw a leaf without looking at the paper. These little exercises loosen up the hand and stop the voice that says you cannot draw.
After a few weeks, students are often surprised. The lines get confident. Shading starts to look like light.
Memorial Park was designed by the Olmsted Brothers, and its old trees, paths and open lawn make a lovely subject in any season. Durand-Hedden House & Garden, the local history museum, has a historic house and garden that some students like to sketch from photographs.
Teachers may suggest snapping photos on a walk through Maplewood Village and using them as reference at home. A storefront, a front porch, the light on Maplewood Avenue at dusk.
If a walk is not on the cards, the view from home works just as well. A teacher can turn a backyard maple, a vase of tulips from the market or a cat asleep on the sofa into a lesson. The aim is to draw what you love, and most people already have plenty of that within sight of their own chair.
Many teachers bring paper, pencils, paints and brushes, at least for the first lessons. You will want a table with good light, ideally near a window, and something to protect it. A jar for water and a roll of paper towels helps for watercolor.
If your hands shake or your eyesight is not what it was, mention it when you message. Teachers can switch to larger paper, thicker pencils or a looser style that does not need a steady hand.
Teachers set an hourly rate between $50 and $150. Lessons are 1, 1.5 or 2 hours, and a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee are added at checkout. Watercolor can take time to dry, so 1.5 hours is popular for painting lessons.
Book one lesson, four weeks at the same time, or every week until you cancel. Cancel free up to 3 days ahead. The teacher writes a short note after each lesson about what you worked on.
Over a couple of months, many students build a small portfolio. Some families frame a favorite piece, and some grandkids end up with a painting of their own front door. If your mother is unsure whether she will stick with it, book one lesson first. There is no obligation to continue, and gift cards from $50 make lessons an easy present.
Choose a one hour, 1.5 hour or two hour visit. Each visit adds a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee. You pay when you book. Refunds follow our cancellation policy: free up to 3 days before. Every published professional completes an online search, a real conversation with our team, a signed provider agreement, a criminal background check through a screening vendor and a national sex offender registry check. Often, yes. A lap board, a small sketchbook and colored pencils or watercolor pencils work well without a table. Tell the teacher about the setup when you message, so they bring the right materials.
Drawing and watercolor are the most common, but some teachers offer acrylics, pastels, collage or simple printmaking. Check the mediums on each teacher's profile, or ask in a message.
No. Most people start at the kitchen table. If your mother enjoys it and wants to paint bigger, the teacher can suggest a simple tabletop easel later.
