Gardens as subjects

Short Hills is home to Greenwood Gardens, a public garden with terraces, old stonework and seasonal plantings. It is an inspiring place to take photos for painting. Old Short Hills Park, next door, has quiet woodland views that make good subjects in autumn.

Back at home, a teacher can help you turn a favorite photo into a small watercolor. Start with simple washes for the sky, then build up shapes and finish with a few dark accents.

If getting to the gardens is hard, a teacher can bring the gardens to you. Flowers from your own yard, a houseplant on the windowsill, or photos on a tablet all make good subjects. Some students paint the same scene in each season, which becomes a lovely set by the end of the year.

A lesson, step by step

Expect the first lesson to be about the materials. How wet the brush should be. Mixing colors on the palette. Why a little paper towel can save a muddy patch. Then you paint something small, like a single flower or a pear.

By the third or fourth lesson most students are working on a full small painting. The progress tends to be visible and very satisfying.

Who these lessons suit

Watercolor and drawing suit people who like calm, focused afternoons. They work well for retirees who traveled a lot and want to paint those memories, and for anyone who always kept a sketchbook but never had lessons.

If your father finds fine detail hard now, a teacher can lean toward loose, expressive painting where brushstrokes matter more than precision.

Some families book art lessons for a parent who is recently retired and looking for a new routine. Others book for someone who has been spending more time at home. Either way, having a lesson on the calendar each week gives something to plan around, and a finished painting to show at the end of it.

Booking art lessons

Teachers set their rate between $50 and $150 an hour. Pick 1, 1.5 or 2 hour lessons; 1.5 is common for watercolor so layers have time to dry. There is also a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee, charged at checkout.

Each teacher's profile shows the mediums they teach, usual days, towns served and reviews. After every lesson they write a short note, so the family can see what was painted that week.

Cancel free up to 3 days before a lesson. Between 3 days and 12 hours ahead, half the lesson is charged, and under 12 hours the full price. If a teacher's usual day changes, message them to find a new slot rather than cancelling the series.

How visits work

Choose a one hour, 1.5 hour or two hour visit. Each visit adds a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee. You pay when you book. Refunds follow our cancellation policy: free up to 3 days before. Every published professional completes an online search, a real conversation with our team, a signed provider agreement, a criminal background check through a screening vendor and a national sex offender registry check. The home address stays private until a visit is confirmed. Read profiles, compare open times and reviews, then book an open time straight from the calendar. Use Message to discuss your first visit.

Questions seniors and families ask

Is watercolor hard for beginners?

It has a learning curve, but beginners do well with a good teacher. Watercolor is more about learning how water and paint behave than about drawing skill, and early exercises are designed to build confidence.

What paper and paints should we buy?

Wait until after the first lesson. Many teachers bring supplies to start and can then recommend a modest student set that works well without spending much.

Can lessons happen in a small condo near downtown Millburn?

Yes. All you need is a table near good light. Art lessons work fine in apartments and condos, and supplies pack away easily afterward into a box or a drawer.

Can I give art lessons as a gift?

Yes. Home Happenings gift cards are available in any amount from $50. Your parent can use the card to book the teacher whose style and reviews they like best.
