Short Hills has some of the prettiest subjects in Essex County: Greenwood Gardens, the Cora Hartshorn Arboretum, and that long line of trees at Old Short Hills Park. Home Happenings sends local art teachers to the house so older adults can learn to draw and paint them, one lesson at a time at their own kitchen table.

Many students want to paint something they know. A photo of Greenwood Gardens' terraces in spring. The pond at Old Short Hills Park. The view from their own back window. Teachers are happy to start from a reference photo, and working from a familiar place keeps people interested when the technique is still hard.
The Cora Hartshorn Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary on Forest Drive South is a lovely source of birds, ferns and wildflowers to draw, and plenty of people already have photos from walks there.
The teacher arrives, often with supplies, and sets up at whatever table has the best light. The first lesson might be a simple pencil sketch, a few basic watercolor washes, or both. You'll work on something small and finish it, because finishing feels good.
Over the weeks, lessons build on each other: drawing shapes, mixing color, light and shadow. Some teachers leave a small exercise to try before next time. Some students do it. No one's grading.
Teachers also tend to adjust as they learn how you like to work. Some students enjoy following a step-by-step exercise; others want to try something and ask questions as they go. After a few visits, the lesson settles into a rhythm that suits you, and many people find they start looking at the world differently, noticing the shadows on a wall or the colors in a winter sky over South Mountain Reservation.
Art is absorbing in a way that television isn't. An hour can pass without anyone looking at a clock. Many older adults say it helps them feel sharp, and it gives hands steady, focused work to do. We won't claim more than that.
If eyesight is a challenge, bring it up. Bigger paper, bolder colors and a good lamp make a real difference.
Teachers set their own hourly rate between $50 and $150, with 1, 1.5 or 2 hour lessons. Painting sessions are often better at 1.5 hours to allow for drying time. A $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee apply at checkout. Gift cards from $50 make a good start for a parent who's been talking about painting for years.
Book a single lesson to see if you click with the teacher, or four weeks at the same time if you already know you want to keep going. Cancellation is free up to 3 days before, so there's little risk in trying.
Choose a one hour, 1.5 hour or two hour visit. Each visit adds a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee. You pay when you book. Refunds follow our cancellation policy: free up to 3 days before. Every published professional completes an online search, a real conversation with our team, a signed provider agreement, a criminal background check through a screening vendor and a national sex offender registry check. The home address stays private until a visit is confirmed. Read profiles, compare open times and reviews, then book an open time straight from the calendar. Use Message to discuss your first visit.
Yes, and many teachers prefer it. A favorite photo, like a garden in bloom or a family vacation spot, gives her a reason to keep going. The teacher will help simplify the scene so it's manageable for her level and doesn't feel overwhelming.
Many do, especially for the first few lessons, and their profiles say what they bring. After a few weeks you'll know if you enjoy drawing or painting more, and the teacher can recommend a small set of supplies to buy.
Most people find it easier. There's no one to compare yourself to, the teacher focuses entirely on you, and you can stop for tea whenever you like. For someone self-conscious about starting late, a private lesson removes most of the worry.
You'll finish something in the first lesson. Real progress, like confident shapes and colors that don't go muddy, usually shows within four to six weekly lessons. Booking four weeks at the same time is a fair way to find out if it's for you.
