Maplewood
Lots of grandparents in Maplewood would love to play something for the grandkids, even just "Happy Birthday" on a guitar. A teacher at the house makes that a real goal. Home Happenings connects older adults in Maplewood with local guitar and piano teachers, and board-certified music therapists, for lessons at home.
Learn an instrument, sing favorite songs or explore music at your pace.

Beginner piano and singing old favorites

Some of the most motivated students we see have a simple target. Play a lullaby for a new grandchild. Strum along at a family sing-along. Learn the song from a wedding fifty years ago. A teacher can work backward from that goal, picking the chords or the easiest arrangement that gets you there in a few weeks.
Guitar beginners often start on a nylon-string guitar because it is gentler on fingertips. Piano students may begin with one hand on the melody while the teacher plays along.
Expect the first lesson to include a little detective work. Does the old guitar in the closet still hold a tune? Is the piano bench the right height? Teachers sort these small things out early, because a comfortable setup makes practice far more likely. Many also suggest leaving the instrument out in the open, not in its case, so it is easy to pick up for five minutes.
Summer evenings bring music to the Springfield Avenue Gazebo, and the Burgdorff Center for the Performing Arts hosts concerts and recitals through the year. Hearing live music nearby is a good push to practice. Some teachers will even suggest a piece you heard at a show so lessons feel connected to town life.
Maplewood Village on a weekend often has music drifting out of somewhere, too. It is a nice place to walk with a new song in your head.
For some families the goal is not learning an instrument at all. It is connection, mood or memory, especially for a parent who responds to music when not much else reaches them. That is where a music therapist comes in. On Home Happenings, music therapy is only offered by board-certified therapists (MT-BC), and that credential is verified on their profile.
Teachers who are not music therapists list their training themselves, and the profile marks it as self-reported.
Teachers set their own rate between $50 and $150 an hour. Pick 1, 1.5 or 2 hour lessons. A $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee are added at checkout. Weekly lessons at the same time keep momentum, so many students pick four weeks or every week until they cancel.
Message teachers before booking. Ask what they would teach first and what you would need at home. Contact details stay private in messages, so you can ask freely.
If your parent is new to the idea, a single lesson is an easy way to test it. There is no commitment beyond that visit. Lots of students book one, enjoy it more than they expected, and switch to a weekly slot. The teacher's note after each lesson tells the family which song is coming along and what to listen for next time you visit.
Choose a one hour, 1.5 hour or two hour visit. Each visit adds a $2.50 booking fee and a 10% service fee. You pay when you book. Refunds follow our cancellation policy: free up to 3 days before. Every published professional completes an online search, a real conversation with our team, a signed provider agreement, a criminal background check through a screening vendor and a national sex offender registry check. The home address stays private until a visit is confirmed. Read profiles, compare open times and reviews, then book an open time straight from the calendar. Use Message to discuss your first visit.
Both work. Piano lets you see the notes laid out, which many people like. Guitar is portable and you can play simple songs with a few chords quickly. A teacher can help you decide after one lesson.
Yes. Board-certified music therapists often work with people living with dementia, using familiar songs to spark connection. On Home Happenings, music therapy is only offered by therapists with a verified MT-BC credential.
No. Many teachers start adults with chord charts, numbers or playing by ear. You can learn to read music along the way if you want to, but it is not required.
You book and pay through Home Happenings from anywhere. Your father just opens the door. After each lesson, you can read the teacher's short note about what he worked on.
